• Story Lab

Like a laboratory for storytelling, ideas and narratives can be reimagined and reshaped in unexpected ways.

I explore how reimagined stories can be told in different formats - from short stories to short films, augmented reality, and interactive installations.

    Wireframing my AR Scenes

I use Zapworks Designer, a no-code, drag-and-drop Augmented Reality editor for web-based applications.

However, after figuring out the different kinds of AR pages I could create, I had to sketch the flow of the experience using very low-fidelity wireframes.

Wireframes allow bare-bone information to be plotted for interactive screens. This was very useful for determining the trivia gameplay of the scavenger hunt and how it could match the technical capabilities of the Zapworks Designer program.

    Populating the 4 Whale scenes

I use 3 types of AR pages for the scavenger hunt I'm developing:

    • Anchoring virtual content to an existing real-world image like a poster (Image tracking)
    • Creating quiz content using text headers and buttons that link to particular actions (Screen only)
    • Placing virtual content on a flat surface so we can rotate your phone around it (World tracking)

For image tracking, I add the scavenger hunt's QR code on a flyer graphic in Canva and then upload it to Zapworks Designer.

For the quiz, I link the buttons to move the user to the relevant 'correct answer' scene and 'incorrect answer' scene.

For the 'correct answer' scene, I used Luma AI to create a 3D model of a whale and her cub. I added a button to the right in Zapworks Designer that when clicked plays an underwater whale song.

    Intangible Cultural Heritage: Antiguan Storytelling

Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) can be described as the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage.

(2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.)

Having gone through the ICH training in September 2024, I am collecting data with my project team in January 2025 on what makes Antiguan storytelling ‘Antiguan’ to add those insights into the ICH repository.

    UNESCO Transcultura Programme 2024

The UNESCO Transcultura Programme aims to professionalize the cultural and creative sector in the Caribbean and to create opportunities for entrepreneurship and access to markets.

As a participant of the Transcultura Coastal Fortifications gathering in April 2024, and as a budding creative entrepreneur, I participated in a panel discussion on the creative industry's link with tourism at World Heritage Sites like that of Nelson's Dockyard in Antigua. I also presented my book 'Yemoja's Anansi' and my interactive coral demo that I previously created.

Crochet for a Cause: Reef to Ridge Project 2024

Crochet for a Cause: Ridge to Reef uses the artform of crochet to spotlight the opportunities available with renewable energy, while educating participants on environmental issues such as marine pollution and coral reef degradation.

Learning from Elaine's Caribbean Crochet in April 2024, under the UNDP GEF programme, I was taught the basics of crocheting coral reef replicas, which I later integrated with sewable circuits, LED lights and light sensors for an interactive coral display.

    ICCROM FAR's Heritage-based Climate Action Conference 2024

First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis (FAR) is an ICCROM flagship programme. It trains, builds knowledge, creates networks, increases awareness and informs policy with an overall aim to reduce disaster risk for tangible and intangible heritage and associated communities.

After completing the training programme in February 2024, I contributed to a virtual panel in March 2024 called 'Climate Change, Culture and Peace in Small Island Developing States' where I spoke of my work with the Elkhorn Marine Conservancy inspiring the beginnings of interactive media work for climate and heritage storytelling.
